Congratulations to Frank Mazza

CPIN Trainee News, Program Completion
Frank Mazza

Congratulations to CPIN student member Frank Mazza (Physiology, supervised by Dr. Etay Hay) on completing the CPIN requirements and graduating from his PhD program. His research 1) identified EEG biomarkers of reduced inhibition implicated in depression using detailed models of human cortex, 2) applied ANNs trained on in-silico EEG for mechanistic patient stratification, and 3) identified EEG biomarkers of novel inhibition-targeting drugs. His work serves to improve depression subtype stratification and treatment monitoring. During his PhD, Frank had 5 publications and currently has 7 publications in submission, 6 of which he is the first or co-first author. Frank received the Ontario Graduate Scholarship and has presented his work locally and internationally, winning poster presentation awards. Frank is an associate editor of the URNCST journal, a Massey Junior Fellow, a teaching assistant at the KCNI Summer School, an executive member of Frontiers in Physiology, and has mentored over 30 students through CPIN- and Physiology-affiliated mentorship programs. He is also a Reach Alliance Researcher who has published and advised NGOs on conservation through community-led initiatives. Frank is excited to continue his training at the Schulich School of Medicine to become a clinician-scientist, integrating computational, clinical, and community-led approaches for improving mental health.
