Gillian Petroff graduated with a BSc (Honours), Specialization in Neuroscience with Distinction, from Western University in 2017. With a strong interest in research, she pursued graduate school, completing an MSc from Western University in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology in 2019. While there, she studied the aberrant neuronal death that occurs in Alzheimer’s disease. Gillian then began her doctoral studies at the University of Toronto in the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute under the supervision of Graham Collingridge. She now studies synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus and identified a novel role of the transcription factor STAT3 in long-term potentiation. During her time at UofT, Gillian has won numerous awards, including two for outstanding presentations from the Collaborative Program in Neuroscience. Gillian will be defending her PhD in August 2023, with plans to pursue a job outside of academia.
